St. James' Anglican Church Teams
Minutes ACW meeting, Sunday May 31
The meeting, following the Pentecost communion service, was called to order in the church hall with a prayer by Arlene Oakes. 30 congregants were in attendance and yummy refreshments were served by Carol and Steve Murchison.
1.Minutes which had been circulated by e mail and posted on the church bulletin board were read by Dana Bachman. Accepted as read: moved by Lucy Craig, seconded by Mary Greaves. Carried.
2.Business Arising from Minutes: (in reference to Diocesan dues) Arlene Oakes stated that these dues go towards a special Literacy project. We can direct the money towards a suitable local project. Congregants were asked to give this “suitable local project” designation some thought.
3.Treasurer's Report: read by Barry Tate, who has agreed to stay on as treasurer. (thanks Barry!)
Balance of $1670.52, with no outstanding bills. Mel Goddard warned that there will be an upcoming expense for an outdoor wrought iron railing. Barry replied this is a parish expense, not an ACW expense.
Motion to accept Treasurer's Report. Moved by Wayne Hutchinson, seconded by Peter Mosley. Carried.
4.New Business
a) Arlene Oakes and Susan Tate spoke about the request from the Diocesan level that ACW (Anglican Church Women) NOT be replaced by Anglican Church Workers. In response to that request Sharon Towne suggested we use the acronym, ACT (Anglican Church Teams)
Motion: moved by Susan Tate, seconded by Lucy Craig that for our local church use we adopt “ACT”
Question: by Barry Tate who expressed concerns about the bank account named “ACW” Arlene Oakes responded that we will continue with that so named bank account.
Carried.
b)Kitchen: Diane Engelstad informed us about a grant application for an initial $10,000. Diane, due to a submission deadline and with the approval of the wardens, has submitted this grant proposal with two projects in mind.
Firstly, in conjunction with the local school, at the grade 5, 6 level we would initiate a “Kids and Guest Chefs” Life Skills cooking class. Following the class parents would be invited to join their children for the dinner which the children had prepared. The class would pay for itself. i.e. a small charge to cover the cost of materials. In this way we would be contributing a community service and participating in “outreach”, consciousness raising of our church profile.
Secondly, and as the main thrust of the grant proposal, which is under the guise of job creation, we would upgrade our kitchen to a commercial level so that farmers who are now able to sell their products at “farm gate” would be able to use this kitchen to produce goods which would be acceptable in a retail store for local food. The initial $10,000 grant would be enough for correct refrigeration and for increasing counter space. Special ventilation is needed for the cook top in order for it to be used for “grease laden vapour”. This would come at a secondary stage.
c)Upcoming events: Andrew Bremner outlined 3 upcoming events.
i)June 9: Pleasant Valley Women's Institute, sandwiches and finger foods. Audrey Isaac wanted to re iterate that all members and former members of a Women's Institute are welcome to attend.
ii)June 27: St. James annual salad, ham and strawberry supper, to be held during Fenelon Falls' Midnight Madness. It was pointed out that the usual strawberry supplier is not available this year and “Thunder Bridge” was suggested as a substitute.
iii)July 4: Wedding of Paul Gilbert and Richelle St. Pierre. Adjournment 1:05 pm Moved by Susan Tate
